Privacy Policy

Gavel is made by MO Horizons LLC. Your photos are yours, your collection lives on your phone, and we collect almost nothing. What follows is the long version, in plain English.
1. Information we collect
Gavel is designed to keep your data on your device. What we collect and why:
- Photographs you appraise. When you tap Appraise, your photo is sent over HTTPS to our appraisal service. See Section 2 — photos are not stored on our servers.
- Appraisal data. The resulting verdicts (name, era, condition, estimate), your notes, and your collection are stored locally on your device. If you have iCloud on, they sync through your private iCloud — under your Apple ID, not ours.
- Subscription identifier. A pseudonymous ID so we know whether you have an active paid plan. See Section 5.
Device diagnostics (model, iOS version, app version) are only collected as part of crash reports — see Section 4.
2. Photographs and the appraisal service
When you tap Appraise, your photograph is sent to our server (a Cloudflare Worker), which forwards the image to our vision provider (OpenAI's GPT-4o) for identification and queries public marketplace APIs (eBay, Ruby Lane) for comparable sales.
We do not store your photographs. Images are processed in memory and discarded as soon as the verdict is returned. Per OpenAI's API policy, content submitted through the API is not used to train their models and is retained only briefly for abuse monitoring. See OpenAI's API privacy policy.
3. Analytics
We use TelemetryDeck for privacy-friendly, anonymous analytics. TelemetryDeck does not collect personally identifiable information. No IP addresses, device IDs, or user profiles are created. We use this data only to understand which features are used and to improve the app.
4. Crash reporting
We use Sentry for crash reporting. If the app crashes, Sentry receives a crash log that may include device model, iOS version, and app state at the time of the crash. No personally identifiable information and no photographs are included.
5. Subscription management
If you subscribe to Gavel, your purchase is processed by Apple through the App Store. We use RevenueCat to check whether your Apple subscription is active. RevenueCat receives a pseudonymous identifier tied to your device — not your Apple ID, name, or email. We never see your credit card, billing address, or real name.
6. What we do not collect
- No account or email registration is required
- No social login or third-party sign-in
- No location data
- No contacts or address book access
- No microphone access
- No advertising identifiers (IDFA) or ad tracking
7. Notifications
Gavel may send local notifications (for example, when a scan finishes in the background). These are scheduled on your device — no push notification server is involved. You can disable notifications at any time in iOS Settings → Notifications → Gavel.
8. Data sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share data only with the service providers listed above — each strictly to operate the app:
- OpenAI — visual identification via the API (not ChatGPT)
- Cloudflare — our appraisal server
- eBay & Ruby Lane — public marketplace comparables
- RevenueCat — subscription status
- TelemetryDeck — anonymous analytics
- Sentry — crash reporting
- Apple — App Store, iCloud, StoreKit
Beyond this list, we may disclose information only when required by law or legal process, or to protect our rights, safety, or property.
9. Data retention and security
Your appraisal data is stored locally on your device and, if you enable iCloud, in your own private iCloud. We do not maintain server-side copies of your appraisals or photographs. Deleting the app removes all local data. All network traffic uses HTTPS.
10. Your choices
- Delete any appraisal from inside the app; deleting the app removes everything locally.
- Turn off iCloud sync in iOS Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Gavel.
- Revoke notification permissions in iOS Settings.
- Contact us at any time to request a data deletion confirmation.
11. Children's privacy
Gavel is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have, please contact us and we will delete it.
12. Your rights under GDPR & CCPA
Residents of the EU, UK, and California have the right to access, correct, delete, or port their personal information, and to opt out of sale (we don't sell). Because we hold almost nothing, exercising these rights with Gavel is usually a matter of deleting the app. For written confirmation, contact us at the address below and we will respond within thirty days.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, inside the app.
